Wednesday 1 April 2009
Scotland 2 Iceland 1
Hampden Park, Glasgow
Attendance: 42,259

Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher both claimed their first international goals to keep Scotland's World Cup dream alive with a crucial win over Iceland at Hampden.

Indridi Sigurdsson had levelled for the visitors but George Burley's men managed to claim the three points which allows them to put distance between them and their nearest rivals in second place in Group Nine.

Just hours earlier it emerged that captain Barry Ferguson and goalkeeper Allan McGregor - who had made his competitive debut in Saturday's 3-0 defeat in Holland - were dropped from the team for a breach of discipline.

The Rangers pair had indulged in a lengthy drinking session at the team's Loch Lomond base following their return from Amsterdam at the weekend, costing them their place in the starting XI for the crunch clash.

However, both were named on the bench and were loudly booed by the Hampden crowd as the team was read about before the game.

Craig Gordon was recalled between the sticks, while the skipper's armband went to Celtic captain Stephen McManus, who had missed the last game through injury.

The breakthrough eventually came six minutes before the break when excellent play saw Hutton race down the right flank and skip past Bjarni Eiriksson before finding McCormack to rifle high into the net.

Iceland levelled  with 54 minutes on the clock. Palmason raced past McManus before smacking the post with a long-distance shot and the rebound fell kindly for Sigurdsson to drive home.

Scotland recovered from the setback and were back in front with 65 minutes on the clock. McCormack's corner found McManus who delivered a header into the six-yard box where Steven Fletcher was waiting to nod into the back of the net.

Gordon prevented a late catastrophe when he blocked from both Eggert Jonsson and Hermann Hreidarsson as Scotland managed to hold on for the win which means South Africa in 2010 remains a possibility for now.

Holland 3 Scotland 0
Amsterdam ArenA, Amsterdam
Attendance: 49,552

Headers from Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Robin van Persie and a Dirk Kuyt penalty gave Holland a comfortable and expected win over Scotland in their World Cup qualifier at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The Scots were made to pay for the chance Kenny Miller spurned early in the game when Real Madrid striker Huntelaar headed in a Mark van Bommel cross after 29 minutes.

Any hopes of a Scotland comeback were crushed right on the break when Van Persie headed in from an Arjen Robben corner.

Scotland defender Gary Caldwell had a goal mysteriously chalked off by referee Laurent Duhamel before Kuyt scored from the spot in the 76th minute after Christophe Berra had fouled Huntelaar in the box.

The build-up had been fantastically raucous with both sets of support battling for supremacy.

Although several hundred Scots fans had been denied entry after the Dutch FA had blocked the use of 800 black market tickets, there was still more than the official travelling support of 8000 inside the stadium by kick-off.

However, when Duhamel blew to start the game, the Dutch asserted themselves immediately and it promised to be a long night for the visitors.

The Scots survived the first 20 minutes or so but the home side eased ahead in the 29th minute, through Huntelaar who grabbed a simple goal.

The goal deflated the Scots and all hope was gone seconds before the interval when Van Persie headed in a Robben corner from close range, with little hindrance from the Scottish defence.

After Berra had conceded a penalty by felling Huntelaar in the box, Kuyt sent McGregor the wrong way with his spot-kick to leave Scotland looking to Wednesday's game against Iceland to get their qualification campaign back on track.

Saturday 11 October 2008
Scotland 0 Norway 0
Hampden Park, Glasgow
Attendance: 50,205

Given the few games in the group, Scotland dropped two valuable points against a distinctly average Norway side.

Scotland lined up with a 4-1-4-1 and, to put it bluntly, it didn’t work and it was Norway who created the best opportunity in the first half when Carew outpaced Caldwell and his shot was well parried by Gordon before the rebound was blazed high and wide by Bjorn Helge Risse.

Just short of the hour, Burley changed to a 4-4-2 and the improvement was dramatic as the Scots looked brighter and more threatening. However, a golden opportunity was passed when Scott Brown, by far Scotland’s best player on the day, fed Gary Naysmith who fed the ball across the face of goal only for debutant Chris Iwelumo to somehow fire wide from two yards.

Norway’s defeat by Holland and Iceland’s win over Macedonia softened the blow and we are still second. Lets hope that missed opportunity doesn’t come back to bite where it hurts.

Iceland 1 Scotland 2
Laugardalsvollur, Reykjavik
Attendance: 9767
Goals: 1-0 Broadfoot (19), 2-0 Robson (59), 2-1 Gudjohnsen (77, pen)

Talks were of crisis amongst the players apparently unhappy at Burley that were only fuelled by Lee McCulloch’s International retirement. As it turned out, it was just another case of false accusations in a petty vendetta against Burley, which was vindicated by a gutsy display from the Scots who claimed a vital win.

Debutant Kirk Broadfoot headed the opener from a Barry Robson corner and McFadden doubled the lead on the hour after following up his own saved penalty. Scotland were cruising until fifteen minutes from time when McManus foolishly handled in the area and was subsequently red carded. Eidur Gudjonsson converted the resultant penalty but the Scots dug deep to hold on in the frantic finale to claim a much needed win.

Macedonia FYR 1 Scotland 0
City Stadium, Skopje
Attendance: 9000
Goal: Naumoski (5)

George Burley’s first competitive game as Scotland Manager but the critic’s in the media were already sharpening their knives, unconvinced at the new appointment. Scotland’s first half performance didn’t help and went a goal down after 5 minutes when Ilcho Naumoski reacted quickest to a free kick which Gordon touched onto the post. The Scots came back more in the second half and were denied two stonewall penalties when Miller then McFadden were upended, but their pleas fell on deaf ears and our World Cup qualifying campaign got off to a bad start in the heat of Skopje.

Macedonia: Milosevski, Noveski, Petrov (Grncarov (79), Sedloski (Captain), Mitreski, Grozdanovski, Shumulikoski, Maznov, Pandev (Tasevski, 83), Naumoski (Trajanov, 69), Lazarevski
